Seashore staff and volunteers really enjoyed participating in last Saturday’s Hatteras Christmas Parade. Thank you for your support along the parade route and on social media!
Winter Storm Diego brought strong winds, heavy rain, and ocean overwash to the Outer Banks. A dune breach on Ocracoke Island is shown in the photos above and below. The National Weather Service reported 70 mile per hour gusts of wind on Ocracoke Island.
Seashore Updates
- Superintendent David Hallac and his staff appreciate the nice turnout at last week’s public meeting in Buxton. At the meeting, Superintendent Hallac presented the park’s plans for building a beach parking area at the end of Old Lighthouse Road in Buxton and a new parking area at Kite Point. The public meeting also provided an opportunity for the superintendent to introduce Chief of Resource Management & Science Tracy Ziegler and Hatteras Island District Ranger David Dunaj for the first time. Thank you, Hatteras Island community, for the great discussions and warm welcomes!
- Cape Hatteras National Seashore has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze the impacts of constructing a new accessible hunting blind and wildlife viewing platform. The EA is available for a 30 day public comment period (December 10 through January 8, 2019). [Press Release]
- The National Park Service has executed a lease with Oregon Inlet Marinas, LLC to provide for the maintenance and continued operation of Oregon Inlet Marina for use as a charter boat marina. The lease is for a 20-year period and will commence on December 31, 2018. As Oregon Inlet Marina comes under new management, Cape Hatteras National Seashore would like to thank Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, LLC for its many years of providing high-quality charter fishing services on the Outer Banks. “The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and the talented captains docking at the marina have put Oregon Inlet on the map as one of the best offshore fishing destinations in the world,” stated David Hallac, Superintendent National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
