On Saturday December 10, 2016, Cape Hatteras National Seashore participated in OBXmas. This regional holiday celebration, in partnership with the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, highlights Hatteras Island community sites, such as the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and Hatteras Village Christmas Parade. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open for climbing seasonally from mid-April to early-October; however, the tower was opened for climbing on this special and chilly winter day. Six members of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society volunteered their time in the lighthouse to make this event possible. They provided safety information and lighthouse history to visitors. A total of 211 attendees, including a high school ROTC group from Charlotte, NC, enjoyed the climb to the top. This event was celebrated by the community and lighthouse lovers alike.
