Today, USS Cassin Young (DD-793) is a museum ship docked at Pier 1 in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The ship served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Throughout the Okinawa Campaign, from April until July, 1945, Cassin Young spent many hours on picket duty. Scanning the air with RADAR, picket ships served as an early warning system against enemy air attack, as well as control points to direct American combat air patrols. Twice, kamikazes struck the ship: April 12 and July 30, 1945. 23 sailors were killed in action as a result. By remembering these 23 sailors who served and died on USS Cassin Young, we hope to pay tribute to the 62,614 sailors of the United States Navy who lost their lives during World War II.
