Things To Do

Once part of a larger complex, today the Blackwell School consists of two buildings. The original 1909 adobe schoolhouse originally included a belfry atop its gabled front end that inspired residents to call it “the Cathedral.” In 1927, a small annex, the Band Hall, was constructed at the rear of the school house.

Both buildings have been altered over time, but still maintain their integrity and demonstrate the original abobe structural and clay tile construction representative of the time and local construction methods. Additional buildings that were once part of a slightly larger campus were demolished in 1969.

Only these two buildings now tell the stories of the school through photographs, memorabilia and interpretive panels that feature quotes and stories from students and teachers.

The site is currently open to the public with limited hours and services.

When you visit:
  • Learn lessons from the past through photographs, memorabilia, and interpretive panels that feature quotes and stories from students and teachers when the school buildings are open and staffed. The site has a functional rest room and an entrance ramp, although neither is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities at this time, the NPS will work to make facilities fully accessible through future planning and projects. Additional visitor information is available on BlackwellSchool.org.
  • View the exteriors of buildings integral to this story of de facto segregation with no visitor services when the site is closed.
  • Take a break from your travels on the Blackwell School playground.
  • Check the Blackwell School Alliance's website for current offerings.
