The ground floor of the McGhee Tyson Airport terminal is soon going to be transformed into a display of East Tennessee’s national parks in honor of the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. The exhibit will go up during National Park Week (April 16-24), and there will be a ribbon cutting event on Thursday, April 21, at 10 a.m. (ET). The display will stay up through the end of the year. The official anniversary of the National Park Service is August 25, 2016.

The National Park Service has partnered with the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority to spotlight the anniversary of the National Park System and will highlight the nine national park units of East Tennessee including:

  1. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area
  2. Obed Wild and Scenic River
  3. Manhattan Project National Historical Park
  4. Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  5. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
  6. Andrew Johnson National Historic Park
  7. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park
  8. Stones River National Battlefield
  9. Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail

The concept and design for the project was developed by See Why Consulting and Robin Easter Design. The two Knoxville-based companies are using retro-style national park posters as their inspiration for the illustrations. The exhibit will encompass the baggage claim area of the airport and will have an iconic image from each represented park as well as details about each site.

McGee Tyson Airport has almost 2 million passengers traveling through the airport annually, and is located in Alcoa, Tennessee.
