• Wood fires and ground fires are NOT allowed anywhere in Big Bend National Park. A charcoal fire in an above-ground grill is allowed; ashes must be packed out. Liquid-fuel stoves are allowed.

Basic Information

Set in a grove of cottonwoods and acacia trees, the Rio Grande Village Campground is located near the Rio Grande. Elevation: 1,850 feet. Paved roads connect each campsite, and grassy areas separate each site. Flush toilets, running water, picnic tables, grills, and some overhead shelters. Dump station nearby. Campers enjoy birdwatching, hiking, exploring. A camp store with showers and a park visitor center are nearby.

Open year round. Please Plan Ahead. Reservations Required. Prime season is November 1 through April 30. Campground is open full capacity at that time. Due to extreme heat of the summer months, the campground operates at reduced capacity (25 campsites) from May 1 through October 31.

Weather

The campground is at an elevation of 1,850 ft. During the winter season (November through March) temperatures are warm and pleasant with daily highs in the mid-70s to low 80s. From April through September, this campground is extremely HOT with daily highs exceeding 100-107 degrees. Directions

Several highways lead to Big Bend National Park: TX 118 from Alpine to Study Butte or FM 170 from Presidio to Study Butte (then 26 miles east to park headquarters), or US 90 or US 385 to Marathon (then 70 miles south to park headquarters). Rio Grande Village Campground is located at Rio Grande Village, 20 miles east of park headquarters.

Regulations

Visitors may stay in the park up to 14 consecutive nights, with a limit of 28 nights in a calendar year. During the busiest time of the year, January 1 through April 15, visitors are limited to 14 total nights in the park.

Pets are permitted in the campground, but must be leashed at all times. Leashes must be six feet (1.8 m) or less in length. Pets may not be left unattended for their safety and for the safety of other visitors and wildlife. Pets are NOT allowed on trails, in the backcountry, or on the river.

Wood and ground fires are prohibited.

All food items must be stored inside a vehicle or animal-proof food storage locker.

Generators allowed in specified sites only:
8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Please plan ahead. Reservations are required for this campground. There are no first come, first served campsites. This campground is open year-round, but only a limited number of campsites are available in the summer months due to the extreme heat (110+ degrees). May 1 - October 31, 2021: 17 campsites reservable 6 months in advance and 7 sites reservable up to 14 days in advance. Accessibility Information

ADA Information - One ADA campsite with paved walkway, accessible picnic table and grill. Adjacent to water spigot and restroom facility.

Wheelchair Access - Paved and flat, the Rio Grande Village Campground is fairly easy to negotiate with a wheelchair. The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail begins behind campsite #18. The first portion of the trail is an accessible floating boardwalk over a small wetland. This portion is suitable for wheelchairs.

Rio Grande Village Group Tent Campground

The Rio Grande Village Group Campground sits near the banks of the Rio Grande, the International Boundary between the United States and Mexico. The four group campsites are great options for groups of nine people or more and is one of the most popular campgrounds in Big Bend National Park.

 

Group campsites are in a grassy area with cottonwood trees.

The group campsites are tent-only; RVs, truck campers, and trailers are not allowed. Vehicle parking is restricted to an adjacent parking area.

Group Site C allows for ONE smaller recreational vehicle (camper van, pickup camper, or small RV up to 20') to camp adjacent to the tenter area as part of the larger group. Parking spots for this are marked with the letter "C."
All other sites are exclusively walk-in, tents only.

There are no hook-ups available in the group sites and generators are prohibited anywhere in the group campground or adjacent parking area.

Nightly rates are $60-$100 depending upon site capacity.

Each site is provided with a picnic table, charcoal grill and bear-proof food storage locker. All four group sites are within easy walking distance to water spigots and restrooms. Showers and laundry facilities can also be found close by at the Rio Grande Village Store.
