Campsite SpecificsPrimitive roadside sites offer nice views, solitude, and a small flat gravel space to set up camp next to your vehicle. No shade, toilets, or other amenities are provided. The use of generators is prohibited in the backcountry. Grand View Campsite 1 (GV 1), Grand View Campsite 2 (GV-2), and Grand View Campsite 3 (GV-3) are small campsites that can accommodate 2 vehicles, 8 people, no horses, no trailers. Each site includes a gravel area for vehicle parking as well as 2 16x16’ gravel tent pads. DirectionsThe 3 Grand View Campsites are located along the Old Maverick Road, 1.4 to 2.1 miles from the northern end of the road, or 10.9 to 11.6 miles from the southern end. Look for the sites on the eastern side of the road. Each site is approximately 1/2 mile apart along the road. Each site is marked with a sign along the roadway. Road ConditionsOld Maverick Road and the gravel access road are both generally well-maintained and accessible to most vehicles. Old Maverick Road becomes slick and rutted after heavy rains and may require high clearance or 4-wheel drive. Always check current road conditions with a ranger. VegetationThere is no shade at these sites. Desert vegetation includes ocotillo, creosote, strawberry pitaya, prickly pear, Christmas cactus, and lechuguilla. There is also some pretty, but invasive, buffelgrass (see photo above). Please take care to avoid walking through or disturbing the buffelgrass to prevent the further spread of its seeds. ViewsGrand View campsites are located on a plateau with an excellent 360 degree vista of the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert and distant mountains. Tule Mountain is directly east of this site. To the west, you will see the lights of Terlingua in the distance. RemarksThese sites are conveniently located within a short drive to Terlingua. You are likely to have cell service from these sites. |
