Campsite Specifics

Primitive roadside sites offer nice views, solitude, and a small flat gravel space to set up camp next to your vehicle. No shade, toilets, or other amenities are provided. The use of generators is prohibited in the backcountry.

Desert Vista Campsite 1 (DV-1) and Desert Vista Campsite 2 (DV-2) are small campsites that can each accommodate 2 vehicles, 8 people, no horses, no trailers. Each site includes a gravel area for vehicle parking as well as 2 16x16’ gravel tent pads.

Maximum vehicle length is 25'
No trailers allowed

Directions

The two Desert Vista campsties are located along the Old Maverick Road, 2.8 miles from the northern end or 10.2 miles from the southern end. DV-1 is along the western side of the road, and DV-2 is along the eastern side of the road. A campsite sign indicates the proper access to each site.

Road Conditions

Old Maverick Road and the gravel access road are both generally well-maintained and accessible to most vehicles. Old Maverick Road becomes slick and rutted after heavy rains and may require high clearance or 4-wheel drive. Always check current road conditions with a ranger.

Vegetation

There is no shade at this site. Desert vegetation includes ocotillo, creosote bushes and some Torrey yuccas.

Views

Desert Vista campsites are located on a plateau with a panoramic view of the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert. DV-1 is on the west side of the road with outstanding views of the colorful Cretaceous Period badlands. You will see the lights of Terlingua in the distance at night. DV-2 is on the east side of the road with gorgeous mountain views.

Remarks

These sites are conveniently located within a short drive to Terlingua. You are likely to have cell service from these sites.
