Directions

K-Bar road is located 2 miles east of the Panther Junction Visitor Center along the road to Rio Grande Village. The gravel road passes an old ranch house (now a research station). KB-1 is one mile from the pavement, KB-2 is at the far end of the road.

Road Conditions

K-Bar Road is generally well-maintained and accessible to all passenger vehicles. Following rains, the road can become very rutted and high clearance vehicles may be recommended.

Vegetation

There is no shade at either of the K-Bar campsites; vegetation is sparse desert scrub.

Views

Good view of the Chisos Mountains to the northwest. The Sierra del Carmen and Deadhorse Mountains can be seen in the distant east; they are beautiful at sunset. Both sites offer great panoramic views of the desert and surrounding mountain ranges, including Panther and Pommel Peaks towards the southwest.

Cautions

Javelina frequent this area. Secure all food in your vehicle, including coolers. Pick up all trash. Javelina become aggressive around food.

Remarks

Power lines and water storage tank are visible from the road. All water for Panther Junction is pumped from an aquifer near K-Bar. A primitive hiking route to Banta Shut-in begins near the KB-2 campsite area.
