State of Arizona (320' level)
One of the most intriguing commemorative stones in the Washington Monument is the Arizona stone, which didn’t start out as stone at all – at least 200 million years ago when it was wood. For its contribution, the state of Arizona provided three sections of petrified wood. Organized under the auspices of the Arizona Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Arizona stone consists of 6,000 pounds of an Araucarioxylon arizonicum log from the Chalcedony Forest outside of Petrified Forest National Park. The state’s name is engraved across the logs and painted with gold leaf. For the dedication, President Calvin Coolidge acended to the 320 foot level of the monument to deliver the keynote address.
