Series: 2022 Battlefield Interpretation Grants Highlights

NPS ABPP’s Battlefield Interpretation Grants empower preservation partners nationwide to modernize and enhance battlefield interpretation – to inspire wonder, understanding, and empathy at the places that witnessed some of our nation’s most challenging events.

• Article 1: Expanding Access – 2022 Battlefield Interpretation Grant Year in Review

  

  NPS ABPP worked to implement the Director’s priorities by supporting our preservation partners to provide equitable and inclusive access to nationally significant battlefields and sites of armed conflict. Nearly half a million dollars was awarded to fund 6 projects across 11 states. Read more about these projects and partners. Read more

• Article 2: Interpreting the Long Road to Freedom: Black Civil War Experiences in the Shenandoah Valley

  

  With the financial assistance of a 2022 Battlefield Interpretation Grant from the NPS American Battlefield Protection Program, the American Battlefield Trust will create a traveling exhibit focused on lesser-known individuals' roles and experiences at sixteen Revolutionary War battlefields. • Article 3: Never the Same River Twice: Interpreting the War of 1812’s Battle of Bladensburg

  

  With financial assistance from a 2022 NPS American Battlefield Protection Program Battlefield Interpretation Grant, Anacostia Trails Heritage Area will develop an interpretive plan to unify visitor experience of the historical and contemporary landscape with multilingual content and enhanced accessibility. • Article 4: A Thousand Voices: The Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley

  

  With support from a 2022 NPS American Battlefield Protection Program Battlefield Interpretation Grant, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation will create an immersive museum experience that brings the diverse individual narratives of the Valley’s Civil War through multi-media displays, artifacts, and virtual reality experiences. • Article 5: Turning Point: An Interpretive Plan for the American Revolution’s Battles at Saratoga

  

  The NPS American Battlefield Protection Program has awarded Saratoga County a 2022 Battlefield Interpretation Grant to develop an interpretive plan on the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. Read more

• Article 6: Developing a Digital Portal to Lake Champlain’s Revolutionary War Naval Battles

  

  The NPS American Battlefield Protection Program awarded the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum a 2022 Battlefield Interpretation Grant to create a digital portal that will enable digitally accessible archeological research, 3D digital shipwreck models, and other educational resources to tell the story of the Revolutionary War on Lake Champlain.
