Sharing History and Inspiring Visitors

Since 2008, Mike has been a dedicated volunteer at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, sharing his passion for history and making every visitor’s experience memorable. A retired systems engineer from the Dahlgren Naval Base, Mike’s journey as a volunteer is rooted in his lifelong interest in the Civil War, a fascination that began growing up in North Carolina where the echoes of the era were ever-present.

Mike finds joy in sharing his extensive knowledge of the Civil War with park visitors and loves answering their thoughtful and often intriguing questions. His warm demeanor and friendly smile make him a favorite among visitors and staff alike. Whether he’s discussing key battles or pointing out lesser-known historical details, Mike’s enthusiasm is infectious.

One of Mike’s favorite places in the park is the view from Marye’s Heights. He notes that one can really gain perspective on the disadvantage the Union forces faced during the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862. His ability to connect visitors with the significance of such locations is a testament to his skill as a storyteller and educator.

When not volunteering at the park, Mike shares his time and expertise at Shannon Airport, where he indulges his love for aviation history, further delighting visitors with his specialized knowledge.

Mike retired from his engineering career in 2006, but his retirement has been anything but quiet. Whether traveling, volunteering at the park, or inspiring visitors at Shannon Airport, Mike continues to enrich the lives of those around him.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Mike as part of our team. His dedication, knowledge, and kindness make him a true inspiration. Thank you, Mike, for all that you do!
