Eightmile Wild and Scenic River

On May 8, 2008, the Eightmile was designated as a Wild & Scenic watershed. The Eightmile River and each of its outstandingly remarkable values are better protected with this watershed-wide designation. There are over 150 miles of high quality streams and rivers within the watershed. In addition, 80% of lands are forested and many offer habitat for rare, threatened and endangered species. In addition to designation, close to 40% of the land in the Eightmile watershed is conserved, protecting critical habitat and riparian areas along the waterways. Over the past thirteen years, there have been many successful projects throughout the watershed, such as the Ed Bills Pond dam removal, the creation of the Richard H. Goodwin Trail, and water quality testing to improve management. Through science, management, and outreach, the Eightmile River Wild & Scenic Watershed will continue to be protected and enhanced for generations to come.
