Check out the Partner Spotlight for UMATR - The Women of Vermont Wild and Scenic to meet the mother of UMATR, Wendy Scott, who started the ball rolling at a cocktail party around 2004 at River Rally with John Little and folks from the NPS!

As more Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers are added, and the program celebrates over 25 years, individuals integral to the establishment of the partnership model for Wild and Scenic river management are beginning to leave us, and with them goes their knowledge and wisdom. In order to preserve the oral history of the first partnership rivers, and to pass on advice and encouragement from those involved in PWSR designation, the National Park Service (NPS) has begun a project to collect the designation stories of these rivers, and interviews of those crucial to these designations. Look for a video highlighting the designation of the Missisquoi and Trout Rivers in 2021, which may be used as a model for recording the designation stories of your PWSR. If you haven’t already done so, consider writing a list of the key players in your river’s designation, and list them by priority so that when your river’s designation is highlighted, you have that information at hand. For more information about this project contact Jamie Fosburgh or Corita Waters at the National Park Service, or Shana Stewart Deeds at shana[dot]stewart[at]vtwsr.org.
