The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT), Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC), and Gettysburg National Military Park, are presenting a five-day training workshop: Current Archeological Prospection Advances for Non-Destructive Investigations.

Although the schedule is weather dependent, the general format will consist of lectures planned in the morning, afternoons dedicated to hands-on fieldwork, and short evening sessions oriented toward other topics like data processing.

Who Should Attend
Cultural resource managers and specialists from federal agencies, tribal, state, and local governments; private contractors; professors and students; and international cultural resource personnel with responsibilities concerning the identification, evaluation, and preservation of archeological and other cultural resources.

Objectives

The workshop is organized to provide a practical introduction to ground-based geophysical and other remote sensing techniques that are commonly used for the purposes of identifying, evaluating, and preserving archeological resources. Among these ground-based methods are magnetometry, ground-penetrating radar, earth resistance, conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility.

Other techniques that receive attention include metal detecting, terrestrial and airborne lidar, and aerial color and thermal infrared imaging. Lectures cover theory of operation, survey methods, data processing, and interpretation. Participants also have daily opportunities to gain introductory level, hands-on experience in the field.

Course instructors consist of experienced practitioners, representatives of instrument manufacturers, and software developers.

Logistics

Dates: The workshop begins at 8 am on Monday, May 13 and end by 5 pm Friday, May 17 (Eastern Daylight Time).

Location: Gettysburg National Military Park, 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA 17325

The lecture portion of the workshop will be held in the Ford Center at the park’s Museum and Visitor Center (wifi will be available to participants), located at 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA 17325.

Field exercises will take place at two locations in the park, with more information forthcoming. The weather in this area of Pennsylvania is mild in May, with average high temperatures of about 73°F and lows around 51°F. Rain is also possible, so plan accordingly.

Transportation: Participants will provide their own transportation to and from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Carpooling is encouraged. The nearest airports are Harrisburg International Airport (MDT), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

Lodging: Numerous lodging options are available in Gettysburg, with chains like Americas Best Value Inn, Quality Inn Gettysburg, Best Western Gettysburg, Comfort Suites, Holiday Inn Express and Suites, and Country Inn and Suites by Radisson, costing less than $100/night. Alternative lodging options are also available in town.

Food: Meals will be the responsibility of the participants. Many food and drink options are available just minutes from the museum and visitor center.

About the Organizer

The National Center for Preservation Technology, and Training is part of the National Park Service in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Our mission is to preserve cultural resources through the use of science and technology, and we work with a variety of partners, including government agencies, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations, to develop and implement preservation technologies and techniques.

At NCPTT, we conduct research, develop and disseminate technical information, and provide training and education on preservation technologies and techniques. Our research and educational programs focus on a wide range of topics, including materials conservation, architectural conservation, archeology, and cultural landscapes.

Fee: Regular $800, $500 students with valid student ID.

Deadline to apply: Monday, May 6, 2024, by 5 pm EDT. This is one week before the workshop start date.

Workshop Cancellation Policy: Since workshops and conferences fill quickly, please sign up as early as possible. If you need to withdraw from an event, you must contact the organizers in writing via email (e-mail us).

Cancellations more than 30 days prior to an event will be fully refunded less a $30 administrative fee. No refunds will be available for cancellations within 30 days of the event, but funds may becredited towards a future NCPTT event. If the sponsors must cancel an event, you may choose a full refund of the registration fee or a credit for a future NCPTT event.
