Kingman Rangers Interpretive Program

The Kingman and Heritage Islands (KHI) are a hidden gem in Washington, D.C. that resulted from dredging the Anacostia River over 100 years ago. Since 2007, the islands have been open as a public urban green space and conservation area. The Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region’s project will increase engagement and equitable access to this area for audiences of all ages—especially Black communities east of the Anacostia—through education, recreation, outreach, and special community programming and events. The multi-layered approach (including Ranger training, website development, and new signage) will promote connections to the Chesapeake watershed, enhance interpretive and environmental education activities at KHI, and encourage community environmental stewardship.
