Mariners' Lake Access Initiative

In 2014, access to Mariners’ Lake (Newport News) ceased after severe flooding from a storm left the facilities in disrepair. The Mariners’ Museum’s project will support the re-opening of the lake for education, enrichment, and recreation - restoring and expanding access to on-the-water educational and recreational activities. Activities include environmental education curricula, water quality monitoring, a 6th-grade kayak program and new kayak launch points and hiring a full-time Lake Program Coordinator. In the end, this project will benefit not only Newport News and Hampton students, but the larger Peninsula and Hampton Roads community as well.
