Diversifying Volunteer Programs in the Anacostia Watershed
Located in Ward 5 in Washington, DC, the U.S. National Arboretum is renowned across the region for its collection of azaleas, bonsais, and cherry trees, but less well-known and utilized for its proximity to the Anacostia River and the adjacent dock that is accessible from the Arboretum grounds. The Friends of the National Arboretum's project will connect with diverse local communities and support several activities, including the following: hiring a volunteer/community outreach manager; meetings with community organizations to identify best practices in community engagement, recruiting, and training volunteers; family fishing evenings with Anacostia Riverkeeper; and a best practices volunteer on-boarding program.
