The Wine Cellar

Wine and brandy made from the fruit grown at Arlington and on other Custis farms were stored in the Wine Cellar. Proper storage of wine was a matter of concern to the Custis and Lee families, as it was to any substantial household of the day, and this cool room offered a good environment for keeping barrels.

George Washington Parke Custis inherited choice wines from his father and grandmother. Valued as a beverage as well as for its medicinal uses, wine required special care to prevent spoilage and pilferage.
