A new National Parks Service report shows that visitor spending among the four parks within the High Plains Group contributed to 60 jobs and a cumulative economic benefit of $5.3 million.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland today formally established Amache National Historic Site in Colorado, following the Town of Granada’s acquisition and donation of the land needed to establish the nation’s newest national park. Amache’s establishment comes as the nation prepares for the Day of Remembrance of Japanese Incarceration During World War II, recognized each year on February 19.

The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Chris Mather as the first permanent site manager of Amache National Historic Site. Mather will begin his new assignment on May 21. The position reports to the High Plains Group Superintendent who oversees Amache National Historic Site, Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, Capulin Volcano National Monument and Sand Creek National Historic Site.

The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Eric Leonard as superintendent of the High Plains Group of parks in Colorado and New Mexico. The High Plains Group includes Amache National Historic Site, Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, Capulin Volcano National Monument and Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site.

The National Park Service (NPS) has recognized three employees in the Pacific West Region for their dedication to preserving park cultural resources and history for this and future generations of visitors. The annual, regional recognition applauds creativity and outstanding contributions in cultural resource management, particularly projects that serve as models across the agency.

President Biden signed the Amache National Historic Site Act today, designating the Amache site in Granada, Colorado as part of the National Park System. This designation, the first in the National Park System during this Administration, will permanently protect the site for future generations and will help tell the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II.
