My passion is for the natural world, and I am especially drawn to water, rocks and trees in their spectacular variety. I work in sculptural acrylics, with texture, color and shapes giving a three-dimensional effect. My landscapes and seascapes are inspired by my travels and enhanced by my imagination.

That is why it was such a joy and honor to be chosen as artist in residence for the month of July 2011. Schoodic Point offered incredible views that became paintings, as did many places explored on Mt. Desert Island and in the surrounding area. Thunder Hole is an example of my penchant for leaving our man-made structures, thus the viewing platform is gone, and Thunder Hole is shown as it might have been.

My painting technique involves many steps, so the studio provided was very important to my work. I also enjoyed the classes I taught, mostly outdoor sketching with color media. I truly appreciate the wonderful opportunity offered by this program.

Joan Meade

Joan has been a painter for most of her life, starting in oils, and discovering acrylics in the 1970's. Raised in upstate NY, she studied art and architecture at Cornell University, and art at Colorado College. Her first exhibitions were in Tunis, Tunisia, and Washington, DC as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Through the years, she has continued studies and shown at art centers around the US and in North Carolina, where she has lived since 1978. Joan has exhibited and sold works across the Southeast in galleries, museums and other venues and also in galleries in New Mexico and California.
