By using our eyes, imaginations, telescopes, and listening to stories, we can become familiar with the night sky and bring the distant universe within reach.
Where: Sandstone Bluffs Overlook, located 19 miles south of Grants on Highway 117. Once at the parking area, look for the red lights!
What to bring: Warm layers, water, and something to sit on. A headlamp or flashlight with a red light setting is recommended.
Lava Falls Trail Guided Hike

Explore an incredibly young lava flow on the Lava Falls Trail with a park ranger.
Where: Meet at the Lava Falls Trailhead located 37 miles south of Grants, NM on Highway 117.
When: This hike starts at 10:30 am at the Lava Falls Trailhead on Highway 117. The guided portion of this hike will take approximately 2 hours.
Trail Details: Lava Falls Trail consists of a 1-mile loop trail marked by rock cairns. The entire hike is on young lava rock. Most of the flow is smooth, but there is some stepping up and down required.
What to Bring: Comfortable hiking boots, layered clothes, water, snacks, sunscreen, hat.
Zuni-Acoma Trail Guided Hike

Explore the natural and cultural history of El Malpais National Monument along the Zuni-Acoma Trail with a park ranger.
Where: Meet at the Zuni-Acoma Trailhead located 18 miles south of Grants, NM on Highway 53. (Please note: the Zuni-Acoma Trail has a second trailhead located on Highway 117. Please be sure you go to the Highway 53 trailhead!)
When: This hike starts at 10:30 am at the Zuni-Acoma Trailhead on Highway 53. The guided portion of this hike will take approximately 2 hours.
Trail Details: The portion of the Zuni-Acoma Trail covered on this hike is mostly flat, with uneven terrain near the end of the hike as you reach the rubbly lava flows. The first part of the hike is through grassland along a dirt trail then it turns into a cairn-marked route on the lava flow. The guided portion of the hike will cover approximately the first mile of the trail and return to the parking area along the same route.What to Bring: Comfortable hiking boots, layered clothes, water, snacks, sunscreen, hat.
What about the bats?
The Brazilian free-tailed bats will return for the warm summer months. Bat Outflight programs will begin in June!
