NPS Photo Seasonal thunderstorms are frequent in the desert southwest and Zion National Park. Monsoon is from July to September and is due to an increase in atmospheric moisture and summer heat, which leads to strong thunderstorms. If you hear thunder: •When thunder roars, go indoors! •There is no safe place outdoors during a lightning storm •If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike •Don’t wait; seek shelter immediately. Shelter in place at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder •Lightning can strike the same place more than once If you are outside: •Immediately move to a shelter; either a metal topped vehicle (windows up) or a fully enclosed building •Do not shelter under a tree or overhang •Never lay flat on the ground; get to shelter instead •Separate if you are in a group; if someone is struck, the others in your group can get help. •Get away from bodies of water •Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (fences, windmills, power lines) •Stay off high places like hills, peaks, or ridges If someone is struck by lightning: •Call 911 if you have cell service •Do not be afraid to touch victim. Human bodies do not hold electricity •Be prepared to begin CPR immediately •Use an AED (defibrillator) if available For current weather information, check the National Weather Service forecast. |
