Dry Weather Allows Temporary Re-opening of Whiskeytown Falls Trail
The National Park Service has re-opened its most popular trail to Whiskeytown Falls after a series of days of fair weather since the first rains of the season. The James K. Carr trail to Whiskeytown Falls will be open until the rains return. Whiskeytown Falls lies within the Crystal Creek drainage, which was the least impacted by the fires and the safest to temporarily re-open to public use.

The National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management have released the Lower Clear Creek Anadromous Fish Restoration and Management Project Environmental Assessment for a 30-day public comment period. This project addresses potential restoration activities along lower Clear Creek between Whiskeytown Dam and the confluence with the Sacramento River. These restoration activities are planned to improve habitat for native fish including the federally listed Sacramento River spring-run Chinook salmon and steelhead trout.

Peltier Valley Road, Shasta Bally Road at Kennedy Memorial Drive, including all trails above Kennedy Memorial Drive, and backcountry campsites Brandy Creek 1,2 and Sheep Camp. The trail to Boulder Creek Falls is also closed.

Fires at Whiskeytown
An early morning lightning storm ignited at least six fires on Saturday June 21, 2008, in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Two fires continue to burn actively on Shasta Bally, therefore the Boulder Creek Falls Trail and Shasta Bally Road (above Sheep Camp) are closed to visitors.

Moonlight Kayak Tours Highlight Summer Programs at Whiskeytown
Moonlight kayak tours will highlight the beginning of the summer ranger-guided activities at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. These very popular programs will be offered at 7:30PM starting on Friday, June 13 and continue each evening through Tuesday, June 17. South Fork Mountain Road Free Permit Process

Whiskeytown has implemented a Quagga and Zebra Mussel Prevention Program. The park is requesting that all vessel owners certify their boat is free of aquatic nuisance species prior to being launched at Whiskeytown Lake.

On June 1, 2008, the National Park Service will be closing the road access gate on South Fork Mountain Road to motor vehicles. Only official vehicles, businesses, and residents will be allowed access in motor vehicles on the road.

Despite wind and rain, Cub Scouts from Dens 5, 41, 42, and 181 helped Park Rangers from Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and Shasta State Historic Park clean out weeds and exotic (non-native) plants from the Native Plant Garden at Whiskeytown’s Visitor Center.

Davis Gulch Trail at Whiskeytown Re-opens
The Davis Gulch Trail at Whiskeytown, closed on March 2nd due to a mountain lion sighting, has been re-opened. Park Rangers have been patrolling and monitoring the trail and have found no evidence of further mountain lion activity along the trail. Rangers will continue patrols of the trail.

Areas Temporarily Closed to Protect Nesting Bald Eagles
Superintendent Jim Milestone announced that Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has temporarily closed selected areas of the lake and shoreline along with the Davis Gulch Trail to all public access in order to protect critical wildlife habitat for nesting Bald eagles. The closures will remain in effect as long as needed, but no later than July 31, 2007.
