An early morning lightning storm ignited at least six fires on Saturday June 21, 2008, in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.
Fire Name: Fire 5-7,
Location: Countyline Road, near the Crystal Creek Drainage
Size: Less than one-tenth acre
Status: Cal Fire Engine crew contained on 6/21. Fire crews will check today.
Fire Name: Fire 5-2
Location: North side of Shasta Bally
Size: 5 acres plus
Status: National Park Service firefighters hiked in Saturday 6/21 and began to suppress the fire. Crews came off the mountain for the night and will hike in today and continue suppression efforts.
Fire Name: Fire 5-3
Location: North side of Shasta Bally
Size: 10 acres plus
Status: National Park Service firefighters hiked in Saturday 6/21, and began to suppress the fire. Crews came off the mountain for the night and will hike in today to reevaluate.
Fire Name: Fire 5-28
Location: Eastside of the park, above Muletown Road
Size: .5 acres
Status: Crews were able to contain the fire on Saturday 6/21/08. The fire will be checked today to see if lines held and mop up will continue.
Fire Name: Fire 5-45
Location: North side of Shasta Bally
Size: Small smoke discovered in afternoon.
Status: No crews on fire; rain yesterday may have put it out
Fire Name: Shasta Divide -Discovered Sunday 6/22/08
Location: East boundary near the Shasta Divide
Size: 2-3 acres
Status: Crews are working to contain fire.
Currently Shasta Bally Road and Boulder Creek Falls trail are closed to visitors to allow access for firefighters.
Fire crews from the National Park Service and contract crews from Firestorm are working to suppress all of these fires. As the weather becomes hotter and drier and the winds pick up, fire behavior will be more active. Safety of firefighters is the number one priority. These fires are located in steep and rugged terrain; no structures are threatened at this time.
