Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is planning to conduct a 226 acre prescribed burn starting Wednesday, November 4, 2009. This prescribed burn, named the Buck, is located in the southeast portion of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and borders a small portion of the Bureau of Land Management land.
Whiskeytown’s fire program is committed to reducing hazardous fuels build up, protecting communities at risk, and working toward long term forest health. As with all of Whiskeytown’s prescribed burns, safety of firefighters and the public are our primary concern. The weather, temperature and humidity will be monitored as well as air quality to ensure a safe and effective burn.
“The south side of the park is thick with dense pockets of brush and many small diameter trees. This burn will help to reduce the heavy fuels that can help carry catastrophic fire that could contribute to dangerous conditions for firefighters,” stated Superintendent Jim Milestone.
To protect visitors and firefighters there may be controlled traffic along Mule Town Road. Several trails in the vicinity may also be closed including the Salt Creek Loop Trail.
Fire crews will secure the perimeter of the burn and use a helicopter for aerial ignition to burn the interior. Every effort will be made to minimize smoke impacts to the surrounding communities, but there will be noticeable smoke during the burn.
