This white oak tree was planted on the North Grounds on April 27, 1935, by two members of the Connecticut Girl Scouts, Janet Locke and Joan Clark, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The tree celebrated the 300th anniversary of the founding of Connecticut and Arbor Day. The tree is a descendent of the original Connecticut Charter Oak Tree from Hartford, Connecticut.
