President Jimmy Carter planted a red maple tree on the North Grounds on November 17, 1977. The tree came from the president’s home state of Georgia and was provided by the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC). Several members of the GFC accompanied the president for this planting along with First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Irvin Williams, National Park Service Superintendent of the White House Grounds.
