Valley Forge National Historical Park
Summer Teacher's Institute
July 2009
Please check back in January 2009 for more information
Join fellow teachers, scholars and National Park Service staff this summer as we explore using museum objects, documents, artwork, plays and scientific endeavors of the American Revolutionary War period in teaching across disciplines. We will explore the social and societal influences and stories of the all who participated in the events that shaped our nation using these materials as resources. Sessions are geared for teachers of all grade levels; focus is on the techniques of locating primary source material and using it creatively in the classroom. Sessions will focus on an interdisciplinary approach using materials beyond the textbook to enhance classroom teaching.
The institute features the following:
- An opportunity for personal enrichment for teachers of all levels as topics are explored with scholars and practitioners
- Act 48 continuing education credit
- Sessions feature both authors and scholars of the period as well as playwrights, artists, master teachers and theater professionals
- Participate in site visits with behind the scenes looks at historic places and their collections
- Tools and techniques for using primary source material, museums, historic sites and collections as enrichment for the classroom

Did You Know?
Varnum's brigade contained the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, a unit largely made up of African American and Native American soldiers. The unit symbolizes the diversity of the army - a diversity not seen again for many years.
