While it is true that many aspects of the Underground Railroad were clandestine in nature, and, as such, were never recorded in writing, there are numerous sources of information that offer insight into the history of a Underground Railroad property. These sites are recognized as National Historic Landmarks, and are regarded as buildings vital to defining and interpreting the Underground Railroad and the history of the United States as a whole.
