History of a House - Now
Late 19th century view of the front of the plantation house.
Late ninteenth century view of the front of the plantation house.

Today, the structures provide an important opportunity to learn about slavery and early nineteenth-century plantation life. Few documents describing the plantation house or kitchen house before the Civil War exist. Just like modern homeowners sell their homes and move away, many residents took their personal documents and memories with them when they moved. What we know of the structures has been pieced together through scanty descriptions, structural studies and rare photographs.
