With the development of the automobile, early NPS architects focused the development of park 'villages' serving visitor needs while preserving the area's spectacular scenery. These prototypical village plan took the form of a small central lodge or pavalion housing a lounge, kitchen and dining room, with outlying cottages and service buildings that were then replicated across the US and the world.
This 'village' concept was later modified into smaller and more rustic cabin facilities as the 1930s brought more visitors into parks and brought parks closer to urban areas.
