Gold rushes across Alaska drew hundreds of stampeders at a time. The Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) was the largest with an estimated 100,000 prospectors heading for the Canadian gold fields through the towns of Dyea and Skagway in Southeast Alaska. Here are women’s stories that highlight the “first woman” of the Klondike, the adventurous prospectors, a reporter’s tale, those who others found their opportunities in “mining the miners,” as well as those who passed through briefly, those who stayed, and those who lost their lives.
