"A Worthy Prototype of American Heavy Industry"

Explore this place where European iron makers brought their special skills to a young Massachusetts colony. Three hundred year old artifacts, working waterwheels, and mill machinery help to tell the story of a business failure destined to be a National Park.

Original Structures

See photos of the original blast furnace, forge, slitting mill, and other resources as they are uncovered during the archeological work of Roland W. Robbins in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Annual Iron Pour on Sept. 11, 12-2 PM

While the new portable furnace that was recently built for these activities is heating up, visitors can carve their own designs in sand molds. Watch as the furnace roars to life, and sense the anticipation build until the furnace is tapped and the molten iron gushes into the newly carved molds. Once the iron cools, visitors can take home their own unique iron plaques. Please note that mold carving is on a first come, first served basis. Bring a lawn chair, picnic lunch, and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the reconstructed iron works. Throughout the day, take a tour, watch the waterwheels as they power leather bellows and the 500-pound trip hammer. Become a Junior Ranger by conducting hands-on activities throughout the park. All activities are free!
