Aquatic Park National Historic Landmark District
Start Date: Mid-November 2008
Duration: 12-18 Months
THE PROJECT
Age, water intrusion and weathering have weakened the Aquatic Park National Historic Landmark District's poured-concrete bleachers and associated underground structures. The project will include: demolition, removal and structural repair of deteriorated concrete; mechanical and electrical upgrades; repair of eight at-grade skylights.
THE IMPACTS
The bleachers and surrounding area will be closed and approximately two feet of earth will be removed from atop the underground structures to effect repairs. Visitor traffic along the Promenade will be limited to pedestrians (or persons walking non-motorized vehicles).
An alternate bicycle route through the park has been posted. At times, the movement of construction equipment and/or construction activity may temporarily close the Promenade and other areas of the District.

This "Plimsoll Mark" is painted on the port side of Balclutha and named for Samuel Plimsoll, an Englishman who fought to pass the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876. Before this law, many ships were dangerously overloaded and many sank. These “coffin ships” claimed the lives of many sailors.
