*Due to COVID-19 field trips may be subject to group specific alterations.*

We are excited that you are planning a visit to Russell Cave National Monument with your students. Our self-guided and ranger-guided field trip options allow your students to explore local and national history. Due to our small staff we can only offer ranger-guided programs certain days of the week for no more than 35 students. However, if your class size is larger, you may make special arrangements with our rangers.

To make arrangements for your class, please call the main office at 256-495-2672.

What you need to know:
  • There is no fee.
  • School groups usually spend between two and three hours here.
  • Self-guided programs are available 3 days a week anytime between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm.
  • Guided programs depend on ranger availability.
  • Film: Our 7-minute film talks about the history of the park. The audio/visual room only fits 49 people at a time, so larger groups will have to split up and do rotations with the activities.
  • Museum: The museum holds several original and reproduction artifacts from the site dating from about 10,000 BCE to 1650 CE.
  • Cave Shelter: A short path on the boardwalk leads to the cave shelter and outdoor exhibits.
  • Trails: There is a 1.2 mile asphalt loop and a 0.2 mile cutoff nature trail.
  • Picnic: We have outdoor picnic tables across the parking lot from the Visitor Center. The area is on a first come, first serve basis. The picnic area is not covered and there is no indoor space for picnics, so in inclement weather you will have to eat on the buses or return to school.
