Meet the Deputy Directors
Lindi Harvey

National Park Service Deputy Director

Lindi L. Harvey was appointed Deputy Director for the National Park Service in mid-October 2007. Her portfolio of responsibilities include the offices of Partnership and Visitor Experience, Centennial Initiative Coordination and Planning, Policy, International Affairs, Strategic Planning, State and Local Assistance Programs, Higher Education and Park Initiatives, American Indian Liaison, and Information Technology. Deputy Director Harvey is also leading several new initiatives and special projects on behalf of Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne and the National Park Service to encourage American children and their families, and international visitors, to discover the meaning of national parks to their lives and to inspire people to experience and become devoted to these very special places.

“Lindi Harvey is a former senior corporate executive with over twenty years of experience in business and financial services specializing in entrepreneurship, succession planning, and leadership development. She has both the political savvy and the fiscal background to help us as we move forward with the National Park Centennial Initiative,” said NPS Director Mary Bomar. “Her skills will complement those already in place in the NPS as we look to another century of preserving the special places in America.”

Before joining the National Park Service, Ms. Harvey served as a special advisor to U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole where she launched a national initiative focused on women’s entrepreneurial, economic, educational, and political participation empowerment, and public policy advocacy. Prior to working with Senator Dole, Ms. Harvey served the George W. Bush Administration as Deputy Director for the Office of International Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State. This office supported diplomatic initiatives, private/public partnerships, and international exchanges. 

Ms. Harvey has extensive experience in the private sector serving as Senior Vice President for Citigroup-Geneva Capital Strategies, an investment banking firm specializing in mergers, acquisitions, strategic planning, and succession planning. 

Ms. Harvey is a passionate advocate for community service, volunteerism, and mentoring, and serves on many boards and advisory councils regarding child development, health care, women’s leadership programs, and non-profit organizations.

Dan Wenk

Dan Wenk,
National Park Service Deputy Director

Dan Wenk, a graduate of Michigan State University, with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, joined the National Park Service in 1975 as a Landscape Architect at the Denver Service Center. Dan worked on planning and design projects throughout the National Park System including the landscape plans for the Arch in St. Louis, visitor facilities at Pictured Rocks and Indiana Dunes National lakeshores. He was selected to assist the government of Trinidad and Tobago on the design for their first National Park, Caroni Swamp.

Subsequent assignments included park landscape architect for Yellowstone National Park in 1979 with responsibilities for the planning and development aspects including the removal of facilities from the Fishing Bridge and Old Faithful areas, the rehabilitation of National Park Service and concessionaire facilities throughout the park.

He was named Superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in 1985. As Superintendent he developed a public/private partnership with the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society to raise over $60 million in non-federal funds for the preservation of the sculpture and the redevelopment and improvement of visitor facilities at the Memorial.

In April 2001, Wenk completed the Department of Interior Senior Executive Service, Development Program. While in the Program he completed two assignments outside of the Department of the Interior with Discovery Communications in their Public Partnerships Office and as a Congressional Fellow with Senator Bob Graham of Florida.

In December 2001, Wenk was selected as Director of the Denver Service Center, the National Park Service central office with primary responsibility for the Planning, Design and Construction programs of the National Park Service.

In March 2007, Wenk was selected as the Deputy Director of Operations for the National Park Service. As deputy director, Wenk has an integral role in managing the National Park Service. The agency has an annual budget of $2.3 billion, 20,000 employees and the National Park System, which includes 391 national park sites covering more than 84 million acres.

With wife Barbara, a child development professional, they have three grown children.

Wenk received the Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award in 1991.
