Starting in the summer of 2018, Point Reyes National Seashore will undertake a large restoration project on the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse. The project will have three phases including the dismantling and repair of the lens and clockwork mechanism, followed by repairs to the tower, work on making the pathways and parking universally accessible, and finally the replacement of the numerous indoor and outdoor exhibit panels, with a number of universally accessible improvements (e.g. tactile models and digital flipbooks with open captions).
The Point Reyes Lighthouse is the last lighthouse in the U.S. of this size with its original clockwork mechanism in its original location. The light guided and protected mariners for generations. Preserving and protecting this structure for generations to come is critical to the National Park Service.
