The First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights was organized on May 24, 1945 under the leadership of Rev. E. A. Austin. For the first couple of years, services were held in a house on Lewis Street. In April of 1948, construction began on a basement-type building that the congregation used for worship services for many years.
The current church facility was completed in 1960 with Rev. Walter N. Harris as pastor. The dedication service was held on August 21. Rev. Henry Dubois served as the guest minister for the event.
Over the life of First Baptist Church, six members of the congregation have been called into the ministry.
