Noatak National Preserve
Biosphere

Natures Research Laboratory

As a famous member of the International Biosphere Reserve program, Noatak National Preserve is an outdoor lab for research on arctic ecology and archeology. At 6.7 million acres, the national preserve protects 280 miles of the Noatak River, plus the flanking Brooks Range and Baird Mountains. Nearly 90% of the land is designated wilderness, which limits development and supports a healthy ecosystem.

Mountains and tundra blush with autumn colors, contrasting with the dark evergreens.

Did You Know?
Approximately 90% (5.8 million acres) of Noatak National Preserve is designated wilderness, making it the fourth largest wilderness in the United States. It is the largest area with an indigenous name.
