Alaska A search for information related to Alaska Native villages, Alaska Native village corporations, and Alaska Native regional corporations yields a report that has slightly different information than that provided in the reports related to the 48 contiguous states and Hawaii. This is because most Alaska Native villages are associated with Alaska Native village corporations, as well as with regional corporations. Following advice from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, it is recommended that, at a minimum, the traditional or IRA village is contacted, as well as the village corporation for that particular Alaska Native village. If neither entity chooses to engage in consultation, or if the regional provenance is the only information available, contact the regional corporation. Whenever possible, contact all three entities, particularly in cases where a certain village(s) is identified in a report. The relationships between the traditional villages, villages established under the Indian Reorganization Act (IRA), and village and regional corporations established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act are hierarchical. The relationships are shown in the reports in different ways depending on whether you search for an Alaska Native village, an Alaska Native village corporation, or an Alaska Native regional corporation. You may want to begin a search based on the regional corporations. The 13 Alaska Native Regional Corporations are:
During a search on regional corporations, only the related Alaska Native village corporation(s) appear in the Related tribes/villages section of the report. The search report does not provide specific information for each record title in the Related tribes/villages section. A separate search must be done on each Alaska Native village corporation to yield its specific information. When a search is conducted for an Alaska Native village corporation, the records that appear in the Related tribes/villages section contain both the Alaska Native villages that belong to it and the name of the Alaska Native regional corporation to which this Alaska Native village corporation belongs. The search report may not provide specific information for each record title in the Related tribes/villages section. A separate search may be necessary to yield specific information on these record titles. When a search is conducted for an Alaska Native village, the records that appear in the Related tribes/villages section contain the record title of the associated Alaska Native village corporation. However, there are a number of Alaska Native villages that do not have village corporations. In such cases, the record title that appears is for the Alaska Native regional corporation. To find out if a record title is for an Alaska Native regional corporation, an Alaska Native village corporation, or a Federally Recognized Native Alaskan Village, read the Entity Type information that appears between the parentheses after the record title in the Related tribes/villages section of the report. Note: Always pay attention to the record titles that appear under Related Tribes/Villages, as well as to the Entity Type that appears in the parentheses after the titles. (See "ENTITY TYPE" in the reports section.) Additional searches may be required based on the record titles under Related tribes/villages to retrieve the most comprehensive information. |
