Native American Consultation
Database
The
Reports
There are two reports that can be
generated for a search query, the Full Data Report and the NAGPRA
Contact(s) Only Report.
Full Data
Report
The first information to appear in this type of report
is a list of record titles consisting of two parts. The first set of
alphabetized record titles are ones for Federally Recognized Indian
tribe(s), Native Hawaiian organization(s), Alaska Native corporation(s),
and/or their designated NAGPRA contact(s) (see "FEDERALLY APPROVED NAGPRA
ENTITY" below). The second set of alphabetized titles are related records
generated by the search query that include alternative names, land claim
map titles, constituent bands, etc.
Below are some examples of the types of records found in the second
section of the list:
- Paiute [generic]: This type of
record title provides (under the record's Related tribe(s)/village(s)
section) a list of tribes that have "Paiute" in their name. The generic
records are not used to group together tribes that are culturally
related, since some tribes with the same generic name term are not
necessarily culturally related. The generic record is only a semantic
tool that is designed to provide the user with a list of tribes related,
in this example, only by the word "Paiute". No individual contact
information should appear in a [generic] record.
- Potawatomi: This type of
record title refers to the title of a portion of the 1978 Indian Claims
Commission (ICC) Map. In this example, it is the portion of the map
titled "Potawatomi". The 1978 Potawatomi claim included four Potawatomi
tribes. This list of tribes is found under the Related
tribe(s)/village(s) section of the report and provides the relationship
to the main record. There is no individual contact information in a
record of this type.
- Iowa Nation: This type of
record title may refer to a number of things. It may be an alternate
name used by members of the tribe or others, or it may be another name
for a portion of the ICC map. It is not the official name of the tribe
and, more than likely, it does not contain any individual contact
information. It is important to check under the Related
tribe(s)/village(s) section to see which records are the most
appropriate for contact purposes. The records appearing under the
Related tribe(s)/village(s) section always show the relationship to the
main record and to the authority for that record.
Below is a description of the Full Data Report sections and headers and
the information they contain.
- ENTITY TYPE(S)
There are many entity types that are used to describe
each record in the NACD. These include: Federally Recognized Indian
Tribe, Constituent Band, Federally Recognized Alaska Native Village, or
Tribally Preferred Name.
- AUTHORITY
This is the name of the source used for the Entity Type section.
Examples of source authorities are: Tribal Leaders Directories, letters
from tribal officials, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices. See the
supporting
documentation.
- LAST UPDATE TO
INFORMATION
This information
appears as mm/dd/yy and is updated by the National NAGPRA
Program.
- FEDERALLY APPROVED NAGPRA
ENTITY
If the record is an
approved NAGPRA contact for a Federally recognized entity, this section
reads "Yes". It is important to read this information carefully because
there are cases where this section reads "Yes", but the record is not
for a Federally recognized entity.
- CONTACT(S)
There are three types of information provided in this
section: the individual contact information, the role or roles that an
individual holds, and the authority or authorities for those roles.
Often more than one individual's name appears in this section. It is
important to check the roles each person holds since many entities have
a tribal leader or a chairperson, etc. listed in addition to a NAGPRA
contact. The NAGPRA contact is the primary concern for NAGPRA issues.
However, it may be desirable to also contact the governing leader in
addition to the NAGPRA contact.
- LAND CLAIM AREA(S)
This section provides is a list of state and county
information referencing land claim case(s) and map identification(s).
The authority for this information is an Indian Claims Commission
decision from the 1978 Final Report of the Indian Claims Commission
map.
- RESERVATION NAME(S)
This section of the report provides the names of the
state and county, and the official name of a Federal Indian reservation
that is related to the entity.
- RELATED
TRIBE(S)/VILLAGE(S)
This section
provides important information on the names of entities with legal or
other associations to the main record (see especially the information
that appears in the parentheses). For example, it might include those
tribes who were plaintiffs in the same land claims case, those who are
constituent bands, or alternate names of the tribe in the main record.
Always compare the lists that appear in this section with the list of
records that appears at the beginning of the report since there may be
slight differences between the two. Note also that the nature of the
relationship of each record listed to the main entity record is
reported.
NAGPRA Contact(s) Only
Report
The information that first appears in this type of report is a list of
record titles consisting only of the Federally Recognized Indian tribe(s),
Native Hawaiian organization(s), Alaska Native corporation(s), and/or
their designated NAGPRA contact(s) that result from a NACD search. All of
these tribes should be consulted. (See section below on "FEDERALLY
APPROVED NAGPRA ENTITY".) Most of these records are Federally recognized
Indian tribes, however, all Federally approved NAGPRA entities that are
not necessarily Federally recognized Indian tribes are listed.
Below is a description of the NAGPRA Contact(s) Only Report sections
and headers and the information they contain.
- FEDERALLY APPROVED NAGPRA
ENTITY
If the record is an
approved NAGPRA contact, this section reads "Yes". It is important to
read this information carefully because there are cases when this
section reads "Yes", but the record is not for a Federally recognized
entity.
- CONTACT(S)
There are three types of information given in this
section: the individual contact information, the role or roles that
individual holds, and the authority or authorities for those roles.
Often more than one individual's name appears in this section. It is
important to check the roles each person holds since many entities have
a tribal leader or chairperson, etc. listed in addition to a NAGPRA
contact. The NAGPRA contact is the primary concern for NAGPRA issues.
However, it may be desirable to also contact the governing leader in
addition to the NAGPRA contact.
Note also that the nature of the
relationship of each record listed to the main entity record is
reported.
