William Henry Jackson
ca. 1935 – 1936
The Department of the Interior commissioned Jackson to paint four murals of its mid-nineteenth century scientific expeditions. In his depiction of the Hayden Expedition of 1871, referenced from at least a dozen photographs, Jackson included Thomas Moran (second from right on horseback, foreground) and himself (standing, middle ground) capturing Old Faithful in eruption.
