Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

William Henry Jackson
ca. July 28 – 30, 1871

Many of Yellowstone's most striking and unusual features, including the Upper Geyser Basin, Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, had been dismissed as hearsay until Jackson's photographs and Moran's paintings produced proof of their existence. Their work, included in Hayden’s 1871 survey report, convinced Congress and the American public of the need to preserve this vast landscape for future generations and culminated in the establishment of Yellowstone as the first national park the following year.
