Katsushika Hokusai
ca. 1830

Hokusai was a prolific Japanese painter and printmaker of the Edo period who enjoyed a long career. His work was extremely popular in Japan and was widely known and influential in the West. Many artists, including Degas, Gauguin, and van Gogh, collected Hokusai's woodcuts. Carl Sandburg enjoyed the art of Japanese artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, and he often gave the similar prints to his friends as gifts.
