Goodwill Tour
On August 26, 1959, the President embarked on a goodwill tour, a visit to the three major European capitals, London, Paris, and Bonn. His primary objective was to confer with western leaders before Soviet Premier Khrushchev’s visit to the US in September. Eisenhower made the trip on a Boeing 707, becoming the first president to fly on a jet plane. The President was aware of his extraordinary popularity throughout western Europe, yet he was still astounded at the wildly enthusiastic receptions he encountered in each country, including Germany.

In December of 1959, he took off again to pay triumphant visits to India, Greece, Spain, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Italy, Iran, and Morocco – eleven countries in eighteen days - the first President to attempt such an extensive journey. This bottle of wine was served to him at a state dinner in Spain during this tour. Early in 1960, to offset the rising tide of Castroism in Cuba, he flew off on a ten day tour of Latin America. A planned trip to Moscow in the summer of 1960 fell through after the Soviets shot down one of our U-2 spy planes over their air space.
