Soldiers of the 29th U.S. Infantry, Supported by a Sherman Tank, Advance along a Street in St. Lo, France
July 18, 1944

The 29th Division came ashore alongside the 1st Division at Omaha Beach on D-Day.  The 29th was nicknamed the Blue Gray Division. It was comprised of National Guard units from the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia whose predecessors had fought on opposite sides in the Civil War.  The units from Virginia traced their lineage back to General Jackson’s Stonewall Brigade.
