President Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery touring Gettysburg Battlefield
1957
Montgomery, the ranking British general in the field during World War II, served under Eisenhower. He paid a visit to the farm while Deputy Commander of NATO. Eisenhower gave Montgomery a tour of the battlefield where they argued tactics and strategy just as they had twelve years earlier in Europe. After his visit, Montgomery published his memoirs which were critical of Eisenhower’s generalship during the war. He did not visit the farm again.
