Letter Writing
The First Lady used this tray to attend to her correspondence while sitting in bed. The bed served as her command post where she would sit until noon working on her social agenda, planning the week’s menus, and assigning work projects to her staff. Most time consuming was her letter writing. She received a thousand letters a month and tried to answer each one personally. After the President’s heart attack in 1955, she responded to each of the 11,000 get well cards with personally signed thank you notes.
