Drafting Set Both Robert E. Lee and his oldest son, George Washington Custis Lee, were graduates of the US Military Academy, the finest engineering school in the country at the time. Drafting tools of this type were essential possessions of both men. R. E. Lee was an accomplished engineer. His improvements to the Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri saved that city from financial ruin and helped keep that “Gateway to the West” open.
